Workpapers, review, and reporting.
A practical lesson on building a traceable consolidation workpaper trail, organizing intercompany eliminations, and preparing reporting for qualified review.
A consolidation close needs a defensible trail.
Once a qualified reviewer has evaluated the entity structure and control questions, the close still needs to show how the conclusion flowed into the reporting package. The workpaper trail should make it possible to trace the source documents, open issues, eliminations, reviewer notes, and final presentation without reconstructing the process from email and spreadsheets.
This lesson focuses on the operational side of ASC 810 review: how the team organizes evidence, resolves intercompany questions, and prepares a reporting package that a controller, fractional CFO, or audit team can follow.
Keep the conclusion and evidence together
Link the entity map, governing documents, control analysis, key calculations, and reviewer conclusion so the basis for the reporting treatment is clear.
Reconcile intercompany activity before elimination
Identify reciprocal balances and transactions, investigate differences, and retain the supporting detail behind each proposed elimination or adjustment.
Separate proposed work from approved reporting
A proposed entry, elimination, or reporting schedule is not final simply because it is complete. Use a named reviewer to validate the support and approve the final treatment.
Match the label to the conclusion
Combined and consolidated financial statements are not interchangeable labels. Presentation and disclosure should follow the applicable conclusion reached by the qualified reviewer.
This is educational content, not accounting advice. The relevant facts, applicable guidance, and qualified professional judgment determine the appropriate accounting and reporting treatment.
Make the close narrative follow checked books.
Numbers Game can give a firm’s chosen Claude or ChatGPT workflow controlled access to approved QuickBooks Online or Xero data, together with the firm’s own instructions and reference files. That can help prepare reconciliation lists, identify intercompany exceptions, and draft a reporting narrative from books the team has reviewed.
Numbers Game does not independently determine GAAP treatment, decide whether consolidation applies, or finalize a reporting package. The professional remains responsible for the control conclusion, eliminations, presentation, disclosures, and every approved accounting write.

The reporting narrative is aligned
The financial-statement label, presentation, disclosures, and management or board narrative reflect the approved conclusion and the books that have been checked.
